High Fructose Corn Syrup Seeking New Name
Innocent makeover or sneaky marketing move?
The Corn Refiners Association has developed an idea in an attempt to stop the negative public feelings towards their product : simply change its name.
According to the Associated Press, the association is applying to the federal government to approve "corn sugar" as an alternative name on food labels.
Created in the 1970s as a less expensive alternative to cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup quickly found its way into everything from juice to bread. But as rates of obesity and diabetes continued to soar, the ever-present sweetener began to symbolize the downfall of America's health.
Can you blame them for wanting to reinvent themselves?
