Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution

Sarah Simmspeople

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution is an effort to get Americans to stand up for better food, especially for the sake of children. Far too many people are negatively affected by what they eat. Here are some of the facts that inspired Jamie's movement:

  • more than 2/3 (68%) of American adults are overweight
  • one person in three (over 33%) is obese - approx 73 million people
  • after smoking, obesity is the #1 cause of premature death
  • 80% of obese children will also be obese adults
  • 31 million American children eat lunch at school and 11 million children also eat breakfast at school
  • the federal school meals budget is $11.9 billion a year...by comparison, health care spending on obesity is already $147 billion.

Jamie believes that every child has the right to fresh and nutritious school meals and that every family deserves real, honest, wholesome food. He has developed recipes for schools to implement in their cafeterias that would replace all processed foods. His recipes include things like crusty mac and cheese with broccoli, apple and cucumber salad with honey dressing, sloppy joe's, and rotisserie chicken. You can access all of his school recipes online with a 2 week cycle menu planner schedule included.

He started his mission in Huntington, West Virginia, but that is only the beginning. He also has tons of recipes and how-to videos for parents to use for home-cooking. If people know how to cook he encourages you to pass those skills onto your children so that they are less likely to eat processed foods when they leave home. If people are clueless about cooking he encourages you to learn now because it is a life changing skill to acquire. His video tutorials show you how to make everything from a simple omelet to items like chicken chow mein.

This is a fantastic cause to support and you can become an official supporter by signing his petition online (almost 400,000 Americans have signed so far). Also, take action by printing out his school menu cycle packets and handing the information over to school superintendents and principals.
