LOLA
Tom Douglas owns six Seattle eateries and Lola is one of them. I stopped in for breakfast yesterday after the front desk agent at Hotel Max suggested I pop over there for an early morning bite. I am not really a "breakfast" person because normally there isn't much thought or love put into breakfast food (IE bacon, eggs, toast, etc..) but I have changed my mind after experiencing Lola.
I have a sharp eye for restaurants that use short-cuts and inferior products because as someone who works in this industry I recognize how easy it is to pick the less expensive item and preserve your overall food cost. Why squeeze your own juice when you can buy it fresh squeezed? Why make your own jam when you can buy it packaged? Why use Grade A Maple Syrup when you can get away with the lesser (and cheaper) grade?
There were no shortcuts at Lola - not even one. The OJ was indeed squeezed fresh in house. The maple pork breakfast sausage was hand-stuffed and housemade. The wheat toast was baked fresh in Dahlia Bakery (one of Tom's other eateries). The housemade pancakes were cooked perfectly and served with warm grade A maple syrup and a side of whipped vanilla mascarpone (heavenly). Their breakfast potatoes were smashed and garlic-fried baby red potatoes (crunchy on the outside, softly mashed on the inside).
Other menu highlights included: a housemade jalapeno-infused vodka bloody mary, made-to-order doughnuts tossed in cinnamon and sugar (pictured above), and super thick Bavarian Meats smoked bacon.
Bottom Line : This breakfast was fit for royalty ....and all of you Epicureans out there.
